Ch 22 & Ch 23

End of Empire 

The introduction of this last chapter that Strayer that got my attention was about Nelson Mandela, a South African national leader. He was convicted for treason, sabotage, and conspiracy that overthrown the government. He spent 27 years in prison, released in 1990, under the domestic and international pressure, he finally spoke as a free man. South Africa held their first election, where blacks and whites were granted permission to vote. With this win, Mandela was the country's first black African president. Mandela was a hero, he used the same words in his speech before prison and after.

The "Third World" is of the Cold War; referring to the areas of the world that was neither part of the Capitalist west nor the Communist east. The global south, was poorer than the northern hemisphere, while the north and south have helped the exploitations; labor, minerals, and land. The wave that came next was from 1945 -1950 and then jetting right into the 1970s, the Philippines -1946, India - 1947, Pakistan, Burma - 1948, Indonesia -1949, Syria -1946, Iraq, Jordan and Israel -1948. This was all because of the support by Americans Independence and Britain's post-war weakness.

The British had promoted growing identity to India. British railroads, telegraph lines, postal services, admin networks, newspapers, education, and language. In the early 19th century, cultural nationalist were reforming Hinduism. Mohandas Gandhi, was born into a province of Gujarat, of the business caste. In 1915, he drove to leadership of the INC. Spending many years campaigning of a political movement, ahimsa, non-violence. He worked towards a peaceful movement, but it was rejected. Gandhi was assassinated later in 1948.

Capitalism & Culture 

Globialziation has developed from when the first homosapiens had evolved. Strayer explains that the 21st century is vastly increasing of a "dense web" of political realtionships, economic growth, and cultural influences, all across the world's binding of their religion, cutlure, people, countries. The worlds economy was transforming, in 1944 The United States assembled a plan that post war the stability. Strayer gives credit to population growth and technology. 

Feminism's liberation movment had become part of the 1960s movment. Within the United States, the civil rights demands of African Americans and Hispanic Americans; the way of life of music, sex, and drugs. Issues of feminsim differed among people and countries, but to some extent reform became just as diverse as Morrocco, South Korea, and Chile. In the west, feminism was loosing theor momentum in the 1920s, when countires were acheiving universal suffrage. Liberation for women was meant in becoming aware of their own opression, taking place thousands of in consciousness groups throughout the nation. Women of color are also the
